CLEVELAND -- Shin-Soo Choo and Asdrubal Cabrera could both be back in the Indians' lineup by the end of the month, and perhaps even by the end of next week. Both Choo and Cabrera are progressing well in their respective rehab programs. Choo (sprained right thumb) had no setbacks from a soft toss batting practice session he took here Thursday, and he's scheduled to take full BP on Saturday. Cabrera (fractured right forearm) had his Minor League rehab assignment transferred to Double-A Akron on Thursday and went 2-for-4 while playing shortstop. He was scheduled to DH on Friday. Cabrera, who has been out since mid-May, is expected to get somewhere in the vicinity of 30 at-bats in the Minors. He had 10, entering Friday.
As for Choo, he might avoid going to the Minors altogether. Manager Manny Acta pointed out that Choo, who appears as if he'll avoid surgery on the thumb, is not even eligible to come off the DL yet and is already on the verge of full participation in pregame workouts. For now, the Indians hope to have Choo join them on next week's trip to Minnesota, and he could be ready to come off the DL by the end of the week, if all goes well. "He's kept himself in good shape physically," Acta said of Choo. "We're not anticipating him going down [to the Minors]. Things could change. But he hasn't lost much time. He's pretty close."
