Carrasco among three Tribe callups

Carrasco among three Tribe callups

CLEVELAND -- The Indians made immediate use of Wednesday's roster expansion, promoting right-hander Carlos Carrasco, first baseman/outfielder Jordan Brown and right-handed reliever Jensen Lewis from Triple-A Columbus.

Carrasco started the Tribe's Wednesday afternoon series finale against the White Sox at Progressive Field and will remain in the starting rotation until season's end. The Indians hope Carrasco, one of four players acquired as part of last July's Cliff Lee trade with the Phillies, emerges as a viable rotation option for 2011.

In 25 starts with Columbus this season, the 23-year-old Carrasco went 10-6 with a 3.65 ERA, striking out 133 and walking 46 across 150 1/3 innings. He posted a 2.08 ERA over his past eight outings.

Brown was immediately slotted into manager Manny Acta's lineup Wednesday, batting sixth and playing first base as Matt LaPorta remained out with a left hip strain.

In 10 Major League games this year, Brown batted .226 with four doubles and one RBI. He hit .298 with 28 doubles, eight home runs and 67 RBIs in 83 contests with Columbus after beginning the season on the disabled list due to a right knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery in Spring Training.

Brown took ground balls Wednesday morning in preparation for his first big league start at first.

"I played a little bit over there in Columbus, but I hadn't taken any ground balls yet here because when I was up previously I knew that wasn't in the cards," Brown said. "I just want to get used to the field."

The 26-year-old rookie intends to make the most of his latest opportunity.

"I just want to lay it out all there and have good at-bats," Brown said. "The last thing I want to do is come up here and swing at a bunch of balls and try to do things I'm not capable of doing."

Lewis' callup marks his fifth Major League stint of the year. He is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 25 big league appearances and went 2-1 with two saves and a 2.67 ERA across 24 outings for Columbus.
