Dellucci sets daily offensive goals

Cleveland Indians outfielder David Dellucci took some time from Spring Training and chatted with fans Thursday morning from Winter Haven, Fla. Among topics discussed were Spring Training in Arizona and Florida, his offseason workout, his goals and his volunteer efforts in Louisiana.

David Dellucci: I'm ready to begin answering your questions. Thanks for joining me today.

Mookie19: Hey, David. How are you liking the Indians? Spring Training in Arizona isn't the same without you.

Dellucci: Thanks, Mookie. I do miss Arizona but Florida isn't too bad.

molly: Hi, Dave. Before the Indians, what was your favorite club you've played for?

Dellucci: I really enjoyed my time with the Texas Rangers.

molly: Who were your favorite players growing up?

Dellucci: Lenny Dykstra, Bo Jackson and Pedro Guerrero.

mandilu2: As busy as you guys must be, and as important it is to focus while in Spring Training, how much free time do they give you to do your own thing?

Dellucci: Early in spring we have more time to relax. I like to fish and so Florida suits me well. As the season nears we spend more time at the field. Usually from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

scout01: How is Spring Training going? Are you enjoying playing with Cleveland?

Dellucci: I really like it over here. The guys are great and I feel like I fit in pretty well.

Mookie19: Do you think you will retire with the Indians or continue playing ball?

Dellucci: As long as someone wants me I'll keep playing. We will see who that will be in three years.

scout01: What will you do to make your way into the starting lineup every day?

Dellucci: I have to take advantage of every opportunity I get, especially against left-handed pitchers.

scout01: Do you set offensive goals for yourself every year?

Dellucci: I used to set goals for the whole season but now I set goals for each day. In baseball we make the game too difficult, so my goals for the day are to see each pitch out of the pitcher's hand as well as I can see, and then put a good swing on the ball. If I do that I can accomplish my goals and will be better off in the long run.

Mookie19: How is Baton Rouge since Hurricane Katrina? Have you been doing more volunteering?

Dellucci: Baton Rouge is still crowded. New Orleans is SLOWLY coming back. This year I am focused on helping the soldiers in Iraq from the Louisiana area whose families and homes were affected by the hurricanes.

samIam: What have you done in the offseason to improve your game?

Dellucci: As I get older, I have to start my workout program sooner in the offseason. I also upped my conditioning program for the long season ahead.

Dellucci: Thank you all for the questions and keep supporting the Indians and me. We are looking forward to a great year.
