Westbrook stymies Jays in Tribe loss

BLUE JAYS 6, INDIANS 2
at Winter Haven, Fla.
Friday, March 30

Indians at the plate: Josh Barfield scored from second on a Victor Zambrano wild pitch in the fourth inning. Later that inning, Mike Rouse, who was named Cleveland's utility infielder earlier in the week, came through with an RBI double.

Blue Jays at the plate: Toronto did not exactly trot out an Opening Day-ready starting lineup, as the regulars stayed home. Aaron Matthews came up with the bases loaded in the second and grounded into a double play, knocking in Rob Cosby from third. In the ninth, Matthews hit an RBI double to left to tie the game at 2. The Jays took the lead when Dustin Majewski singled past third for an RBI, and Toronto tacked on to that lead with three insurance runs.

Indians on the mound: Jake Westbrook, making his final spring tuneup before Wednesday's start in Chicago, became the first Tribe starter this spring to last seven innings. All he gave up was an unearned run on six hits and a walk, striking out three. Roberto Hernandez worked a perfect eighth.

Blue Jays on the mound: Zambrano was using this outing as his last chance to prove to Toronto that he should be its fifth starter. He was a little wild but nonetheless effective in his six innings of work, giving up a pair of runs on two hits, walking four walks and striking out four. Jason Frasor, who was named the club's primary setup man earlier this week, worked a scoreless seventh.

Grapefruit League records: Indians 16-13-1; Blue Jays 11-14-4.

Up next: The Indians will hop on a flight bound for Memphis for Saturday's 5:30 p.m. ET Civil Rights Game against the Cardinals. Left-hander Jeremy Sowers will oppose right-hander Adam Wainwright. The Jays will wrap up their Grapefruit League slate by hosting the Reds at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday. Right-hander Josh Towers will face left-hander Bobby Livingston.
