Indians Place RHP Josh Tomlin on 15-day Disabled List; Reinstate RHP Roberto Hernandez

The Cleveland Indians today announced that RHP JOSH TOMLIN has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation, retroactive to August 13. The club has reinstated RHP ROBERTO HERNANDEZ (#55) to take Tomlin's place on the club's 25-man roster.

Tomlin, 27, was a member of the Indians Opening Day rotation and has gone 5-8 with a 6.36 ERA (73 ER/103.1 IP) in 21 games this season, including 5-8 with a 5.72 ERA (58 ER/91.1 IP) in 16 starts. He last pitched on Sunday against Boston, as each of his last 4 appearances have come in relief. This marks Tomlins third career stint on the disabled list and second in 2012 after being sidelined from May 12-27 with right wrist soreness.

Hernandez, 31, is scheduled to make his 2012 debut with Cleveland as the club's starting pitcher in Wednesday night's series finale against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, California. Hernandez has missed most of the 2012 season after visa issues prevented him from entering the United States, but returned to Cleveland in July. Since then he has made 4 minor league starts while serving a 3-week suspension from Major League Baseball, going a combined 2-1 with a 4.07 ERA (11 ER/24.1 IP), 20 strikeouts and just 4 walks for Low-A Lake County (2 starts) and Triple-A Columbus (2 starts). His most recent outing came on Friday with Triple-A Columbus in a 5-1 win over Indianapolis at Huntington Park (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R-ER, 1 BB, 5 SO).

With these moves, the Indians now have 39 players on the club’s 40-man roster.
