Indians invite a pair of players to Major League camp

CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has signed free agent OF MATT CARSON and OF CEDRIC HUNTER to Minor League contracts with non-roster invitations to 2013 Major League spring training camp.

Carson, 31, spent most of the 2012 season with the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings, the top affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, where he hit .282 (119-422) with 28 doubles, 2 triples, 14 HR and 53RBI in 115 games. Matt was tied for 11th in the International League in doubles (28) and 15th in OPS (.804). He also appeared in 26 games over two stints with the Twins in August and September, hitting at a .227 (15-66) clip. The Temecula, CA native has appeared in 72 Major League games with Oakland and Minnesota since 2009 and began his career in the NY Yankees organization after his 5th round selection in the 2002 amateur draft out of BYU.

Hunter, 24, spent the 2012 season in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, hitting .268 (95-355) with 19 doubles, 2 triples, 5 homers and 44 RBI in 129 games at Triple-A Memphis.  He was originally selected in the 3rd round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft by the San Diego Padres and appeared in 6 games for the Padres at the beginning of the 2011 season.  Hunter was claimed off waivers and went to 2012 spring training with Oakland before being traded to the Cardinals on April 4. The left-handed hitting native of Decatur, Georgia entered the 2007 season as the top prospect in the SD organization according to Baseball America.
