Akron INF Giovanny Urshela wins Player of the week honors

The  Cleveland  Indians  today  announced  that  Akron INF Giovanny Urshela has  been  named  the  Indians  Minor  League  Player  of  the  Week,  April  15-22.  The  Indians Player  of  the  Week  Award  recognizes  an  individual  performance  from  within  the  Indians  Player Development System and is announced each Tuesday.

Urshela, 21, hit .333 (10-30) with 4 doubles, a home run and 7 RBI throughout the week, while posting a .900 OPS (.333 on-base pct./.567 slugging pct.).  He recorded four multi-hit games, including April 18 vs. Bowie when he went 2-5 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Urshela also belted his first home run of the season on the previous night against Trenton. On the season, he is hitting at a .281 clip (18-64) with 5 doubles, a home run and 8 RBI.

Giovanny was originally signed by the Indians as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2008. The 6-0, 197-lb Cartagena, Colombia native notched Minor League Player of the Week honors last season, along with earning the Carolina League Batter of the Week Award for August 6-13. Urshela had his best offensive season as a professional in 2012, hitting .278 with 14 home runs, 59 RBI and 30 doubles through 114 games with the Mudcats. The right-handed hitting and throwing third baseman entered the 2013 campaign rated as having the best infield arm in the Indians organization in Baseball America's Best Tools Survey.
