CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland Indians today announced that Double-A Akron 1B/DH CHUN CHEN has been named Indians Minor League Player of the Week for April 22-29. The Indians Player of the Week Award recognizes an individual performance from within the Indians Player Development System and is announced each Tuesday.
Chen, 24, hit .471 (8-17) over the span of 5 games and led all Eastern League players with 3 doubles, 6 RBI, 8 extra-base hits and a 1.238 OPS (.591 OBP/.647 SLG). Chen recorded 4 multi-hit games, including a notable effort on April 24 vs. Trenton (2-for-4) when he delivered a 3-run double in the 3rd and a game-winning RBI-double in the 7th. He has reached base safely via hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in 19 of his 20 games for the Aeros, all consecutively, batting .348 (24-69) with 5 doubles, 3 home runs and 16 RBI overall this season. Chen leads the E.L. with a 1.056 OPS and 16 walks, while his .348 avg. ranks 3rd.
The 5-foot-11, 210-pound native of Taiwan was originally signed by the Indians as a non-drafted free agent in 2007. After clubbing 16 home runs in 2011, Chen was named to the E.L. Mid-Season All-Star team in 2012 and finished the year with the 7th-highest average in the Indians Player Development System at .308.
