Indians add Masterson, Lewis

CLEVELAND -- The Indians added a new face and a familiar one Saturday.

The Tribe added Justin Masterson to the Major League roster and recalled Jensen Lewis from Triple-A Columbus. To make room for the two right-handers, the Indians designated right-hander Winston Abreu and left-hander Mike Gosling for assignment.

Masterson, who was acquired Friday in a trade with the Red Sox for Victor Martinez, will start out of the bullpen, but will eventually transition into the rotation. He was used in both roles for the Red Sox this season, but has spent the majority of his time in the bullpen.

He was 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 31 games -- six starts -- for the Red Sox.

Lewis had been in Columbus since June 26 and hadn't allowed a run over his 12 appearances. In 18 2/3 innings he had given up no runs on 13 hits with 28 strikeouts and just seven walks.

He is 2-3 with a 5.03 ERA in 28 games with the Indians this season.
