Indians provide fans with better Internet access

Club rolls out new Wi-Fi network and DAS in partnership with Verizon Wireless

CLEVELAND -- The Indians have been proactive when it comes to social media and interacting with fans in recent years. The organization has now taken steps to make sure the ability to connect at Progressive Field is even easier.

On Monday, the Indians announced that they have rolled out a new Wi-Fi network and Distributed Antenna System (DAS) in partnership with Verizon Wireless. Fans at Cleveland's home ballpark will now have more reliable access to the web, social media and popular applications.

"The new DAS and Wi-Fi provide the platform for which technology can enhance the experience at the ballpark," Indians president Mark Shapiro said in a news release, "and can help to further create memories for our fans."

The DAS is an in-building network that features a variety of antennas, aimed at boosting Verizon's high-speed 4G LTE strength and ensuring higher performance. The new system has the ability to accommodate the thousands of fans in attendance using smartphones.

The Wi-Fi network will provide additional Internet access throughout the stadium.

"This implementation will significantly enhance fans' digital experience at the ballpark," said Neil Weiss, the Indians' vice president of technology and chief information officer, "by making social media and their favorite apps more easily accessible, as well as completing common functions like making a call or sending an email or text."

The Tribe also encourages fans to interact with the team's Twitter account (@Indians) and check in on MLB.com's At the Ballpark app, which will offer fans exclusive deals at Progressive Field throughout this season.
