Brantley continues strong showing on AL ballot

CLEVELAND -- Michael Brantley may have been slowed down by injury over the past week, but his momentum at the ballot box has kept going strong.

As of Sunday's American League All-Star ballot update, Brantley remained Cleveland's lone representative on the voting leaderboards, jumping up to a season-high sixth-place among the outfielders with 1,284,901 votes. Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista led the AL for a third straight week with 3,665,208 votes. Behind him are Angels center fielder Mike Trout (3,286,511) and Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera (2,645,000).

More

Brantley has a .320/.386/.511 slash line to go along with a career-high 11 home runs this season. He owns the fourth-best OPS (.897) and is tied for the second-most runs scored (49) among qualified AL outfielders. He can also claim the second-most outfield assists of that group with eight, trailing only Yoenis Cespedes (nine).

Brantley was named the AL Player of the Week after hitting .538 and scoring nine runs from June 9-15. But he missed most of last week with a mild concussion, which he sustained on Monday against the Angels. He returned to the Tribe's starting lineup on Saturday, snapping his nine-game hitting streak with an 0-for-5 performance.

"He means so much to what we're doing," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Brantley. "So, having him back is nice -- all the way around. Defensively, teammate-wise, in the batting order, he's really turned himself into one of the better players in the game."

If Brantley earns a selection, it would be the fifth-year outfielder's first career trip to the Midsummer Classic.
