Wood held out of action due to soreness

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Indians pitcher Kerry Wood was scheduled to pitch Saturday but was held out as a precautionary measure because of arm soreness, manager Manny Acta said following the club's 5-0 loss to the Rangers.

Acta downplayed Wood's absence, and Wood was seen at Goodyear Ballpark fielding groundballs.

Wood has a long history of arm injuries and was moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen while with the Cubs because of the injuries. He eventually revived his career as a reliever and signed a two-year, $20.5 million deal with the Indians before 2009 season.

Last season, Wood went 3-3 with a 4.25 ERA, 20 saves, 63 strikeouts and 28 walks in 55 innings over 58 appearances.
