Carmona leads the way in win over Reds

|
INDIANS 8, REDS 2
at Goodyear, Ariz.
Wednesday, March 17

Reds at the plate: Brandon Phillips notched two RBIs with a run-scoring single in the first inning that scored Drew Stubbs. Ryan Hanigan scored on a Phillips groundout in the sixth. Orlando Cabrera was 1-for-3 with a double.

Indians at the plate: Matt LaPorta was 2-for-3 with a ground-rule double and two runs scored. During a four-run top of the fourth, Mark Grudzielanek hit a two-run double to left field and scored on Shin-Soo Choo's RBI single to center field.

Reds on the mound: Starter Bronson Arroyo was supposed to go four innings, but lasted 3 2/3 innings and allowed five earned runs and eight hits. Arroyo walked one and struck out two. Still in the fifth-starter battle, Micah Owings turned in a good outing with three scoreless innings with no hits, two walks and two strikeouts. In a less-than-stellar outing, Daniel Ray Herrera gave up two runs on two hits and two walks in his one inning.

Indians on the mound: Starter Fausto Carmona gave up one earned run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts over four innings. Yohan Pino followed with three innings and allowed one run, one hit and two walks with one strikeout.

Worth noting: All proceeds from the game at Goodyear Ballpark -- including ticket sales, concessions, merchandise and parking -- were donated to the Southwest Valley Family YMCA.

Cactus League records: Reds 7-5-1; Indians 7-4-2

Up next: The Reds and Indians meet again in Goodyear on Thursday at 4:05 p.m. ET/1:05 p.m. PT on MLB.TV, with the Tribe being the home club this time.

Cleveland lefty Jeremy Sowers missed out on an opportunity to compete for a rotation spot because of left shoulder soreness. He'll likely open the season on the disabled list as he builds up his endurance after the injury, but he'll make his Cactus League debut Thursday, starting and getting two innings of work. Chris Dickerson, who is seeking a starting spot in left field or center field, is batting .435 (10-for-23) through 10 games. He will be in the starting lineup and leading off. Homer Bailey will be on the mound starting for the Reds.
